GMO: Monsanto’s Worst Nightmare Looks Like Becoming Reality

For years the corporate agriculture industry (Big Ag) cartel and, corporate payroll scientists and opportunistic politicians have been pushing the idea that to switch from traditionally propagated crops to genetically modified organism was the only way to feed the world’s burgeoning millions.

The tame scientists who either worked for Big Ag or were on government funded research programmes were happy to produce doctored data suggesting that Genetically Modified (GM) food crops were completely safe for human consumption. Many independent biologists and geneticists disagreed but their work was derided and the strongest critics of Big Ag were marginalized or found their careers had been steered into a dead end (a familiar story to those of us who have observed the journey of the sciences from open minded inquiry to something resembling a medieval church sect.)

But in what marks a major shift in the way the wider public consume information, the citizen journalists and ‘crazy conspiracy theorists’ of new media have gradually chipped away at the completely fabricated case for GM food crops.

Some, like this blog, have focused on the economic and social consequences of handing control of the food supply to a handful of corporate enterprises with very dodgy track records on ethical matters. Others who are more appropriately qualified to challenge the misinformation and manipulated statistics put out by corporate scientists reported on how data had been faked and trials rigged.

And now it seems the tide is turning against Big Ag and their lackeys:

Monsanto’s Worst Fear May Be Coming True
Jonathan Latham, Independent Science News

The decision of the Chipotle restaurant chain to make its product lines GMO-free is not most people’s idea of a world-historic event. Especially since Chipotle, by US standards, is not a huge operation. A clear sign that the move is significant, however, is that Chipotle’s decision was met with a tidal-wave of establishment media abuse. Chipotle has been called irresponsible, anti-science, irrational, and much more by the Washington Post, Time Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, the LA Times, and many others. A business deciding to give consumers what they want was surely never so contentious.

The media’s heavy criticism of Chipotle has an explanation that is important to the future of GMOs. The cause of it is that there has long been an incipient crack in the solid public front that the food industry has presented on the GMO issue. The crack originates from the fact that while agribusiness sees GMOs as central to their business future, the brand-oriented and customer-sensitive ends of the food supply chain do not.

The brands who sell to the public, such as Nestle, Coca-Cola, Kraft, etc., are therefore much less committed to GMOs. They have gone along with their use, probably because they wish to maintain good relations with agribusiness, who are their allies and their suppliers. Possibly also they see a potential for novel products in a GMO future.

However, over the last five years, as the reputation of GMOs has come under increasing pressure in the US, the cost to food brands of ignoring the growing consumer demand for GMO-free products has increased. They might not say so in public, but the sellers of top brands have little incentive to take the flack for selling GMOs.

The more the ‘experts’, professors and politicians tell us genetically modified crops are good, the mor suspicious we become.

"Anti-Putin" Alliance Fraying: Germany, Slovakia, Greece, Czech Republic Urge End To Russian Sanctions

When I posted a blog yesterday, Game and set to Putin (it wasn’t quite match) which commented on how while Russia has shrugged off the American and EU sanctions, European farmers were being hit hard by Russia’s retaliatory ban on foodstuff from the EU, Mike St. Mark replied that while the Russian leader was running rings round the USA, EU and Ukraine, he didn’t think it was quite game and set at that point.

It is now. And possibly match too. I just has a belated look at US financial services news site Zero Hedge and found this. Tyler Durden who writes the posts has feeds from AP, Reuters, Press Association and all the rest at his fingertips so he’s way ahead of us workaday bloggers:

Anti-Putin” Alliance Fraying: Germany, Slovakia, Greece, Czech Republic Urge End To Russian Sanctions

Last week Germany reported that in the second quarter, its GDP declined by 0.2%, worse than Wall Street consensus. This happened a few shorts days after Italy reported a second consecutive decline in its own GDP, becoming the first Europen country to enter a triple-dip recession. What’s worse, Europe’s slowdown took place before the brunt of Russian sanctions hit. Surely in the third quarter the GDP of Germany, a nation whose exports accounts for 41% of GDP, will be even worse, with whisper numbers of -1% being thrown casually around, but one thing is certain: Europe is about to enter its third recession since the Lehman collapse just as we forecast at the end of 2013, a “triple-dip” which may become an outright depression unless Draghi injects a few trillion in credit money (which will do nothing but delay the inevitable and make it that much worse once the can can no longer be kicked), and unless normal trade ties with Russia are restored.

Which means one thing: for Europe to resume the status quo, it needs to break away from the “western” alliance and the sanctions imposed upon the Kremlin which solely benefit the populist agenda of Washington, and certainly not Europe proper, which it is now quite clear, is far more reliant on Russia than vice versa. it is also something Putin apparently was aware of from the very beginning.

And now, that realization is starting to spread to Europe’s own countries, which – while the new cold war was only one of rhetoric were perfectly happy to go for the ride – but now that trade war has finally broken out, suddenly increasingly more want out.

As we reported previously, it all started with the Greeks, a nation of heavy food exports into Russia, who were the first to announce their displeasure with the “Stop Putin” coalition:

Genetically Modified Truth? How Corpoate Money Corrupted Science.

Little Nicky is sceptical about many things, it’s in my job description. Incidentally, for the benefit of those over qualified, under educated idiots who think I’m right wing extremist, it is a basic tenet of Liberal philosophy that we all have a duty to question that which is presented as an established truth.

Recent established truths have included ‘Mass immigration is good for the economy’, ‘borrowing money to pay interest on debt already owed is sound financial management’, ‘the science is settled’ and ‘Genetically modified food crops will feed the world and turn us into a race of superbeings’.

No doubt you have come across many fascists who would suppress free speech in order to silence questions on such topics. They will call themselves liberals but how can anybody be a liberal when they oppose the freedom to doubt and question.

We will return to the first three areas in which the ‘liberal’ fascists are trying to control debate very soon no doubt, but for today we are looking at an article from the left leaning alternet.com (common sense has no political bias) on …

6 of the Biotech Industry’s Biggest Marketing Myths to Convince You GMOs Are Great

After an opening section which looks at how biotech corporations have bought scientific opinion (which, like Barack Obamas arse when he was a teenage ‘crack ho’) is sold very cheaply) and describes how corporate money has corrupted the scientific research process and turned higher education into a kind of brothel for compliant intellects, it gets more specific, focusing on Elanco, a biotech subsidiary of pharmeceutical giant Eli Lilley to expose the blatant lies in their document How We’ll Feed The World, which is presented as an objective study but is really nothing more than marketing puff for the products of the parent company and their partners.

Enriching life in the USA says the Elanco web page. OK, but enriching it with what you might well ask. Bovine growth hormones to create milk cows (sorry, units – we must make the process impersonal) that produce more milk.

The next lie is that consumers who want unadulterated food are a nutty fringe minority.

Actually most consumers want unadulterated food, the fringe minority is not defined by their eccentricity but their wealth. Governments and academic crooks have collaborated with corporate interests to make pure, unadulterated foods unaffordable to the majority.

And so it goes on. Click HERE to go to the Alternet page and read the full, three page exposé. And remember, its not the freethinkers and sceptics that support political movements whose leaders talk of criminalising dissent on topics like global warming scaremongering, or the lies that hide the dangers of GM foods.

Forget the warlords and the madmen, it is the truth tellers who pose the real threat to power.

The Best foods for protein are not those you have been told

Another group of scientists proved to be crooks and liars interested more in promoting the profits or corporations that provide their funding? Well that’s the way it looks as evidence mounts that intensively farmed produce, particularly meat and dairy goods are not as rich in nutrients as when our ancestors ate meat and milk or cheese from naturally grazed cattle or eggs from free range hens. As usual, its all about money in the twenty first century. Time to reclaim our humanity?

But guess what, meat, eggs and dairy food groups, all produced mainly by heavily industrialised intensive farming are the best foods for boosting the profits of Big Agriculture, Big Food and the chemicals corporations that make fertilizers, pesticides, veterinary medicines and other products used in the production of high protein food.

Hotly Debated: 1240 Scientists Demand Seralini GMO Study be Republished, Will NOT Be Suppressed

Over 1240 scientist signatories have demanded that a study previously published on the toxic effects of GMO maize and RoundUp that was retracted by the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT) be reinstated. This is a massive backlash against an industry that has tried to silence well-qualified scientists from publishing the truth about GMOs. These scientists and others plan to boycott Elsevier -a ‘world-leading provider of scientific information – until the journal, FCT, reinstates a study carried out by Gilles Eric Séralini et al., which was been debated throughout scientific and non-scientific circles alike.

“The suppression of scientific evidence for commercial gain should be punishable by criminal charges. The tobacco companies got away with this for nearly 30 years before the world woke up to the problem, and even then the response was insufficient. The risks posed by the epigenetic response of plant DNA to foreign genes is potentially catastrophic, and the precautionary principle should apply. Censoring science is playing with peoples lives.” Professor Gilles-Eric Séralini is a biologist at the University of Caen. He published a study on GMOs which clearly showed how damaging they were to health, and pointing out that “Agricultural GMOs do not exist independently of pesticides.” That study can be found here.

Many individuals have heard it a million times, but for the uninformed, or those just looking to fuel their 2014 fire to finally defeat Monsanto and their cronies, you’ll be interested to know that Monsanto’s Bt-toxin is far from ‘safe’ as the chemical company claimed it would be when filing their papers with the FDA. New research from Canada show that BT toxins are showing up in pregnant women, and low and behold – they are killing human embryo cells. 2014 is the year of the horse, but we’re not through beating this one to death.

It’s called reproductive toxicology, and just like their suicide seeds, these Bt toxins are starting to kill our own unborn children. This is no exaggeration. Monsanto, the TPP and Global Food Dominance

“Control oil and you control nations,” said US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the 1970s. ”Control food and you control the people.”

Global food control has nearly been achieved, by reducing seed diversity with GMO (genetically modified) seeds that are distributed by only a few transnational corporations. But this agenda has been implemented at grave cost to our health; and if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) passes, control over not just our food but our health (see posts in Black Hat Biotech menu), our environment and our financial system will be in the hands of transnational corporations. And our governments of course already are.

If GM crops are bad, show us the evidence
Steve Connor

full article at The Independent

extract

“It’s no longer tenable to call GM ‘unnatural’ and so inherently wrong

It is nearly 20 years since the first GM crops were grown.

Some 28 countries cultivate them on a commercial scale, and many hundreds of millions of people now safely eat GM food – directly or indirectly – on a regular basis. Yet, to judge from the rhetoric of anti-GM activists – from the rough-cut environmentalists to the smooth-talking purveyors of organic food – you could be forgiven for thinking that medical catastrophe and genetic Armageddon are upon us, courtesy of the “Frankenfoods” revolution.

Calestous Juma, a professor of international development at Harvard, is not one to mince his words when it comes to genetically modified crops. To paraphrase his speech at McGill University in Montreal later today, Juma believes the time has come for the vociferous opponents of GM to put up or shut up. The use of transgenic crops, he points out, has to date prevented the spraying of 473 million kilograms of toxic pesticides, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 23.1bn kg – equivalent to taking 10.2 million cars off the road – and saved 108.7 million hectares of land from being turned into farmland. Rather than creating environmental havoc, GM crops have, by and large, been better for the environment than growing the equivalent conventional crops, with relatively lower yields and higher chemical input.

Equally, no-one has died or fallen ill directly as a result of eating GM food. Studies showing that GM food damages the health of laboratory animals have been discredited. Contrary to what the pro-organic lobby would have us believe, it is actually more dangerous to eat organic food – as the 53 people in Germany who died in 2011 from eating organic beansprouts tragically discovered.”

end extract

he hi wrong on all counts. Not only is there a mountain of evidence by perfectly crespectable scientists (a couple of nobel prizewinning biologists amongs them) that cast very serious doubts on some strains of GM staple food crops (the way they generalise is an attempt at deflection typical of the corporate ‘science’ lobby. No genuine scientist would ever say GM foods are safe or are not safe, they would examine GM seeds species by species.

Safety is not the primary issue here, the world is overpopulated, the planet cannot sustain 7 billion people, especially with the poor five billion demanding lifestyles enjoyed by the privileged two billion, Our New Unhappy Lords will reduce population one way or another, be it by war, famine, pestilence, plague of GM organisms. No, the real issue is about monopoly control of the seed stock.

Is this shit sucking sycophant, this corporate lackey, and rent seeking apology for a human being really asking us to believe it would be a good idea to had a monopoly on the food supply to a corporation whose track records shows they are utterly ruthless in pursuit of the corporate goals, whose criminal record showws they have repeatedly falsified data, lied, bribed and used threats and coercion to foist unsafe products on the world.

Connor says, “Show us the evidence” but as with the CAGWARTs (Carbon Driven Anthropogenic Global Warming Alternative Reality Twats), the GM lobby will try to deny any evidence that exposes their scam is invalid. As for Connor, if the cupid stunt is still asking for evidence what fucking planet has he been on for the past twenty years?

One of the top comments I read under his post was this:

Gail Evans:
a) The seeds are patented, which means farmers can no longer produce seeds from their own crops for the next season, but are forced into further monetary outlay to buy from GMO seed companies. If they do not and produce their own seed from GM source material, they can get sued for millions.

b) The chemicals used on these crops are highly toxic and in Argentina have resulted in rising cases of cancer.

c) The use of these chemicals is killing off the bee population which the planet needs for pollination.

d) The studies done by the French scientists, one of the few that have actually been allowed to be published in the Main Stream Media, have proved that these GMO crops cause cancer, infertility and shortened life spans. On the contrary, companies like Monsanto who have to employ people like Blackwater, have done all they can to gag the press so that they are the alpha and the omega on the whole subject.

In South Africa a full open, honest and fully disclosed Independent Scientific Study ( independent of all companies such as Monsanto and all their affiliates, known and unknown covert operatives such a Blackwater) by at least three different laboratories over no less than a period of five years. In the interim, all products containing any GMO ingredients, or any ingredients derived from a genetically modified plant, or any meat product fed a genetically modified feed, must be labelled as such in bold and clear type.

then this:

pdjmoo 8 days ago:
The highly unregulated biotech re-engineering and patenting of life is highly dangerous and unethical. Science does not enough about the intract web of life to be meddling with singular aspects of our biosphere, creating chain reactions.

Further the issue of GMOs is more about the total impact on the environment and human health that is only now beginning to show up.

The patenting of reengineered seeds, the pesticides, chemicals, fertilizers required to grow them all owned by the same biotech cartel; and the devastation to our natural biodiversity, poisoning of our soils and waterways, killing off beneficial insects all have given our future over to a science still evolving and painfully disconnected from the greater health of our environment and human health. We are rolling the dice in a relatively new aspect of science, biotechnology, that has little or no oversight and regulation and much of it, once released, will be very difficult to reverse.

Finally, it is driven by a trillion dollar biotech cartel and, insofar as the gmo aspect and ownership of the global seed supply means control of the global food supply and the pesticides needed to control them. Not okay. YOUR FOOD, YOUR HEALTH

Back to me. GMOs are not the problem, it is making them resistant to chemicals that damage the environment and have unaccounted for reactions in the human body that is the problem.

As long as you improve the natural resistance, or growth of a plant that is not a problem at all. The problem is that by genetically modifying a plant to be resistant to weekiller and insecticide we turn that plant into a vehicle for delivering the toxin into the human food chain.

A recent report takes 123 pages to list and summarise peer reviewed research papers raising serious concerns about G M foods. Scientists respond with their usual knee jerk “ah but it’s not proper science (to a ‘scientist’ it seem, proper science is only that which affirms their prejudices)Well you should understand by now only a fool would take a scientists word for anything. Check the evidence for youself and then see if you agree with Steve Connor and the scientific crooks and liars he writes poropaganda for. Here’s the 123 pages of evidence they pretend to be unaware of

Not really evidence they will shout. Well look, the report lists project after project, all peer reviewed (scientists place great faith on peer review)so again we see the dishonesty and hypocrisy of those who defend the genetic engineering industry.

This article does not talk about the chemicals Monsanto customers are contractually obliged to use and which are deadly to humans. Science doesn’t need to tell me that putting agent orange in my food is bad for me, but it does say so: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691512005637 Rats died 2-3 times more rapidly than untreated animals. The author is a liar and he is welcome to sue me for saying so! I shall leave him without a career, a home, a family, a pot to piss in or a penny to scratch his arse with and take great pleasure in doing so.

If Monsanto Are As Clean As They Claim, Why Do The Need a Private Army?

The Monsanto Company likes to proclaim that they are the good guys, here to selflessly feed the world, help with sustainable agriculture, and, as if those lofty goals are not enough, champion human rights across the globe. All you have to do is look at their commitments page to see how worthy they are of a shiny corporate halo:’

Monsanto propaganda makes claims like this:

“At the heart of Monsanto is a very clear and principled code of conduct – one we expect all employees, contractors and management to live by every day. We operate under a genuine value system—our pledge—that demonstrates integrity, respect, ethical behavior, perspective and honesty as a foundation for everything we do.’

A key part of fulfilling the promise of our value system is by engaging our communities in a significant and positive manner. Not only do we work hard to support the family farmer in a variety of ways, but we also …”

So why, you might well ask, does a company that is so angelic and so committed to putting common good ahead of corporate profits need a private army:

Real all about Monsanto’s gowing paranoia over the anti – GM movement and the extraordinary steps the corporation is taking to protect it’s poisonous intellectual property:

The European Commission is working on a revision of the European seed market in the form of a regulation. Thus, a decision of the European Court is legalized in July 2012: Farmers are allowed to sell only officially authorized seed. So far, old and rare seed varieties were excluded that were grown in long standing economic and exchange traded, usually in small quantities. If it goes to the Commission’s plans, small farmers or private persons may not even give away their homegrown seeds in the future.’

If You Weren’t Yet Convinced The Lunatics Are Running The Adylum, Here’s Proof.

With the number of Americans on food stamps hitting new highs year after year and the nation in dire financial straits and having trouble raising the money to fund it’s welfare bills, those very clever people, The Scientists, have come up with a plan.

As it is a plan devised by scientists it has, as regular follower of Little Nicky Machiavelli might expect, noting to do with helping the poor or solving any of the nation’s urgent problems and everything to do with flushing huge amounts of taxpayers money down the toilet.

‘Nasa is planning to lasso an asteroid and park it near the moon to study as part of a new, ambitious mission,’ the White House has confirmed. It might sound like a science fiction movie, but President Obama is expected to put $100 million aside for the asteroid rodeo in next week’s budget.

Plans already existed to send astronauts to an asteroid, but the galactic lasso is expected to speed the mission up by bringing the rock closer. It’s hoped that by examining the asteroid, scientists could work out how to mine them for materials and learn more about the mineral composition of the solar system.’

When asked what are the risks should the space ship Asteroid Wrangler fail to lasoo the rock and send it hurtling towards earth instead. The NASA dickheads have the answer, “A five hundred ton asteroid is no threat to earth, they said. Cupid Stunts, only a few weeks ago (science tits never know what is going on in the real world) an 10 ton asteroid exploded on entering the atmosphere, exploded releasing energy equivalent to 30 times that of the Hiroshima bomb, crashed into a remote part of Russia and caused the deaths of 54 people.

Imagine what a 500 ton lump of rock descending at 60,000 miles per hour could do it it came down in a heavily populated area.

If we are really serious about saving the planet, it is clear what we must do. We have to put all the scientists in a big spaceship and send them to the nearest inhabitable planet. That should satisfy their scientific curiosity and we would all be safe, at least for the 40,000 years it would take them to get there.

The Arrogance Of Corporate Power, The Compliance Of Science

Throughout my lifetime Antibiotics have been on of humanity’s beast weapons against some (but NOT all of the most deadly diseases: Penicillin is one of or possibly the most prescribed drugs.

But it was folly to start prescribing penicillin as a placebo and even greater folly to introduce it into the food chain by dosing animal feeds with it to they would produce more meat for human consumption more quickly. The growing resistance of disease to antibiotics has been described as a ticking time bomb by the UK Chief Medical; Officer and the United States Centre For Disease Control.

Given the amount of time the science industry spends railing against creationism and blethering about evolution one would think they’d understand those bacteria that managed to survive an encounter with an antibiotic would pass on their genes. Isn’t that how natural selection works?

Science was ever fascism’s whore of course and whatever corporate money asks for, corporate money gets and to hell with evolution, after all it’s only a theory isn’t it? Well so it would seem when big money finds the facts of natural selection inconvenient.

A growing body of evidence shows how harmful over – prescription, use as a placebo and the practice of using antibiotics as a feed additive can be. These thinks have been known for years but the corporate fascists of Big Pharma and their academic poodles resolutely deny there is a problem and routinely dismiss any evidence that does not fit their agenda as ‘unscientific’ then subject the researchers to something resembling a medieval with hunt (this is called ‘the scientific method’).

Taking routine course of antibiotics and consuming them in our food has been leading to serious and dangerous side effects, which greatly affect everybody’s health and well being. Many responsible doctors and researchers warned that they were seeing more and more penicillin resistant bacteria as new strains evolved. Not long ago it was announced that a new variety of gonorrhea bacterium that was resistant to antibiotics had been identified among people attending STI clinics.

Little Nicky Machiavelli has reported on concerns in more general medicine that evidence that proves how harmful this practice can be has been available for a while now. Taking routine course of antibiotics and moreover pouring them into our food has been leading to serious and dangerous side effects, which greatly affect everybody’s health and well being. There are instances when antibiotics can save lives, so they have their place. But switching from specific, well determined and occasional use to a broad use and even worse, to a ”preventive” measure, in humans and animals, is totally insane and looks like extermination.diseases reduced to minor infections by antibiotic drugs could become major killers again

There are still many instances in which antibiotics can save many lives, so they have their place. But switching from targeted and occasional use to a broad user and ”preventive” measures in humans and a profit booster for Big Agri in animals, is totally insane and is starting to look item in a genocidist agenda.

Below you have strong evidence which confirms my statements:
Antibiotics As Prescription Drugs

Thanks to fear and panic generated by government ./ corporate propaganda (remember Swine Flu, Bird Flu, HIV/AIDS, SARS and the various superbugs we have been warned on people became so fearful these days whenever they have a sniffle or infection. They all want it to go away, right away, at any cost! Immediate relief for a life of damaged health.

But common infections do not need antibiotics Our body simply doesn’t work like that. And overuse does more harm than good.

Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride describes it thus:

“The whole length of our digestive tract is coated with a bacterial layer providing a natural barrier against invaders, undigested food, toxins and parasites. If this “coating” (mucosal barrier) gets damaged, well … you get the picture! These beneficial bacteria protecting the gut wall also work against invasive pathogenic micro-organisms by producing antibiotic-like substances, anti-fungal volatiles, anti-viral substances. They engage the immune system to respond appropriately to invaders. Our healthy indigenous flora has a good ability to neutralise toxic substances from our food and environment, inactivate histamine and chelate heavy metals and other poisons. Again, this is all possible IF the “barrier” is intact…Without a well functioning gut flora, the gut wall not only becomes unprotected, but also malnourished.

Antibiotics destroy beneficial bacteria in the human body, not only in the gut but in other organs and tissues they change bacteria, viruses and fungi from benign to pathogenic, giving them an ability to invade tissues and cause disease they make bacteria resistant to antibiotics, so the industry has to work on more and more powerful new antibiotics to attack these new changed bacteria. A good example is tuberculosis, where wide use of antibiotics has created new varieties of the Mycobacterium Tuberculosis resistant to all existing antibiotics
They also have a direct damaging effect on the immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections, which leads to a vicious cycle of more antibiotics and more infections

Since babies are born with a sterile gut flora, the mother esentially “downloads” her gut health / flora into the baby through breastfeeding. No wonder why digestive problems are usually shown to get worse with each generation, considering the mother’s poor gut health and bottle feeding.

The variety of functions and the essential role of an intact mucosal barrier, a healthy gut flora, make this the root of our health. We simply can not thrive without a healthy digestive system.”

What is the clinical reality these days? A vast majority of people have a damaged gut flora and a major culprit to this is: ANTIBIOTICS!

Two Articles On The Food Crisis, Corporate Fascism and Political Complicity

Global Food Supply Has Fallen Under The Control Of The Big Food Cartel

Food prices have rocketed over the past two decades, to the extent that even in nations like Britain and the USA poor people are having to rely on free food banks to stay properly nourished. How did the global food supply chain get in such a state. Well our dear chums The New World Oder are at the bottom of it. And then there are all the usual suspects, greedy banks and corporations, incompetent politicians, corrupt public servants and the Marxist idiots on the left who obstruct the doing of what needs to be done.

Has The Global Food Supply Fallen Under The Control Of The Big Food Cartel?
Faceless Corporations That Drive The Global Economy – In An Unhealthy Direction

Some of the most powerful corporations in the world, not the biggest in terms of turnover, profit or numbers of staff employed, but powrful in terms of the amount of control they exercise in global markets, are barely known outside their own industries. You should find out all you can about corporations that affect your life on a daily basis, from the food you eat to your underpants. Here is a good place to start.

Faceless Corporations That Drive The Global Economy

Sugary Drinks Tax To Pay For School Meals Healthy Options

Sugary drinks should be taxed at up to 20p a litre, say health campaigners – with the proceeds helping to pay for free school meals.

Picking up on an idea first floated during the era of the Neo Fascist New Labour government, food and farming charity Sustain said the Government could raise £1bn a year from a tax on sugary drinks, while also saving lives by cutting excessive consumption of unhealthy substances.

As if to demonstrate that fascism is alive and well in the public and charity sector the report has been backed by more than 60 organisations, including the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, Friends of the Earth, the National Heart Forum and the Royal Society for Public Health.

Diet-related illness is now costing the NHS £6bn every year, the report said although these statistics have been exposed as deeply flawed and in the case of many ‘scientific’ studies, blatantly fabricated.

Sustain urged Chancellor George Osborne to introduce the duty in the Budget on March 20 and to channel most of the cash raised into a Children’s Future Fund for programmes to improve children’s health. Money could be spent on campaigns to encourage youngsters to eat more fruit and vegetables, the report said. Erm, didn’t that fat tongued twat Jamie Oliver try bullying kids into eating more fruit and veg? And weren’t the results disastrous. I seem to remember reports of kids digging tunnels, disguising themselves as binmen, making hot air balloons out of condoms and doing all kinds of things to escape from school and get to the chip shop or kebab van at lunchtime.

Sustain’s campaigns manager, Charlie Powell, said: “Sugar-laden drinks are mini-health time bombs, contributing to dental diseases, obesity and a host of life-threatening illnesses which cost the NHS billions each year. “We are delighted that so many organisations want to challenge the Government to show it has a public health backbone by including a sugary drinks duty in Budget 2013. It’s a simple and easy-to-understand measure which will help save lives by reducing sugar in our diets and raising much-needed money to protect children’s health.”

Ummm – anything to substantiate that £billions a year claim Charlie, or was it, like the safe alcohol comsumption figure and the BMI ratio at which we become obese, plucked scientifically out of thin air?

Sustain chairman Mike Rayner, of Oxford University’s Department of Public Health, added: “Just as we use fiscal measures to discourage drinking and smoking and help prevent people from dying early, there is now lots of evidence that the same approach would work for food. Our obesity epidemic causes debilitating illness, life-threatening diseases and misery for millions of people. It is high time Government did something effective about this problem.”

Oxford University? Ah, so they’re not farmers and cooks at Sustain then, they’re Oxford University cocooned tax eaters. Very likely the only thing they want to sustain is the flow of research grants that will keep them in featherbedded luxury.

It’s never about public health, it’s always about the people who advise the government on public health.

Tuck Off Control Freak Food Fascists

Hold the front page! Mobilise the army! Demand an emergency debate in parliament! It has just been revealed that children are still able to buy sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks in some schools! Something must be done… Yes, as revealed on last night’s edition of the Channel 4 current-affairs series Dispatches, titled ‘The School Dinner Scandal’, not-very-healthy food is available in the tuck shops of some schools. Now those old enough to remember Billy Bunter will know that in times gone by children lived on unhealthy food and it did us no harm.

Dispatches asked both local-authority schools and …

science, faith and g m food

Contemplating protests so widespread in America about genetically modified organisms (G.M.O.s), I’m struck by the facts that Americans to-day, just as peoples around the World, are taller and generally have a greater life expectancy than ever before. (Admittedly the Dutch are taller but that’s because much of Holland is below sea level and they have to be or they wouldn’t be able to see over the walls.)

Whilst it’s true that some parents are burying their children, this is due to a diet of manufactured food heavy in refined sugar, saturated fats and, to a lesser extent, salt — more significantly to an excess of such food. The general population, which ingests G.M.O.s not incidentally, as one might expect of animals, but as part of its diet, appears to be thriving – in America as where ever such products are available.

For a myriad of years we have as farmers been effecting genetic change in both crops and livestock. For most of that time the process has been slow : we could not isolate individual genes and, in any case, had no understanding of the precise mechanism that brought about the traits we sought. What the agrochemical industry is doing is merely condensing the work of decades, even centuries, in to years.

****************

This is not to say that genetic modification is without risk : that exists whether scientists do it over a decade or farmers over a century ; development, something man is able to achieve at a rate not available to other species, entails risk. We sail the oceans and fly the skies ; occasionally a boat sinks or an aeroplane crashes : even the animals, having developed these skills organically over millennia, sometimes suffer such failure. So what ? Ought we then not to take risk ?

Safety is the management of risk and it’s because experience tells us that, left to their own devices, industrial corporations might not tell us about failures in their tests or about failures later in the field that we have the Food and Drug Administration and similar agencies in other countries to keep them, as far as they can, honest.

If we’re to feed the World’s burgeoning population — and the longer the poor are left in poverty (sc. not allowed to burn their own fuels so that they have reticulated electricity) the more rapidly it will grow — we must find ways of making the land more productive. One way is to increase crops’ resistance to pests. We can do this by spraying crops with almost indiscriminate pesticides, inherently risky to wildlife and the environment generally for obvious reasons, but much more efficiently by targeting particular pests with dedicated characteristics of the crops that will eliminate just those pests.

Till we become omniscient, however, we shall not be in a position to avoid risk altogether ; what we must guard against is fear of the unknown. We must get away from regarding science as a system of religious belief, its church the Internet, and return to science based on honest research, clear thought and scrupulous peer review — all things sorely lacking in the ‘science’ on which so much public opinion and policy are now based.

*****************

Is it actually science that is at fault or is it the green religion on which the blame must be placed?

At the moment it appears the green religion is leading the fight against science and advancement in all spheres, climate change, GM crops, population growth and so on, with their cry of ‘the earth is doomed’.

The more people that believe the doom and gloom the more self fulfilling it will be.

There is an answer to that – better education in science and engineering with the emphasis on teaching people to think for themselves. Unfortunately, that precludes the current generation and maybe the next until the necessary teachers can be produced that do not bow down to the green leftist religion.

*****************
Indeed. The problem is not science, but the wilful manipulation of scientific research reports (which are often, by their very nature, inconclusive, hedged with uncertainties, sometimes even vague) by people with axes to grind. So the report that states that the Earth’s climate may, if current modelling is correct, warm by between 1 and 3 degrees over a period of 50 to 100 years becomes “Climate will warm 3 degrees in 50 years, say boffins”.

The GMO objections of about a decade ago arguably had one thing about right. The results of the science were commercially exploited with ruthless drive and merciless resort to litigation against any who stood in the way, intentionally or not. That was a great tactical error by the corporations concerned. Had they been a little more patient, they would have won the day, I think – and by more honourable means.

Science and engineering are often highly complex and nuanced, and don’t readily respond to soundbite journalism or the sort of simplistic responses commonly found in the humanities. I agree with Ivan that better education is the key – but better journalism must play a part, too.
*****************
Me.
I’ve no qualms about eating GM crops although if we want better yields to feed the burgeoning population pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere is a better and cheaper way to go. What does worry me about the push for GM however is how it would concentrate almost total control of the food supply in the hands of a few corporations led by Monsanto which has as good a record on environmental sensitivity as Hitler had on racial diversity.

****************
I have a few qualms about GM. The “feed the world” thing doesn’t really do it for me, given the previous outcry against “Terminator” genes (thankfully disavowed by Monsanto) and the patenting of basic foodstuffs. In both cases, the farmer is required to go back to the seed producer each year to buy more seed. In business they talk about “owning the layer”. For Amazon, it’s books, ebay does Auctions, PayPal does money, Apple has iTunes and the App Store. In this case the layer happens to be food, which is good for nobody but the big Agro-Tech firms.

Secondly, we’re not talking about selective breeding – that is taking the best of the plants to breed better ones. The idea behind GM modification is to take a genetic marker that doesn’t appear anywhere in the plant naturally, and introduce it. The resultant creation is visibly the same, but inherently slightly different. In a laboratory setting this might be interesting science, but to redesign the DNA of a crop and then to release it to the wild thereafter to cross-pollinate with all other “natural” varieties has a wide potential impact, and denies choice to those who like their cornflakes as nature (or God) intended. Once out of the box, this cannot be put back. Whilst not quite the “grey goo” spoken of by Eric Drexler there could be a similar effect.

For what it’s worth, the low tech solution is probably the better one here. Half the world is overweight, whilst the other half is hungry. It doesn’t take a genetic scientist to figure out that one.

**********************

Saturated (animal) fats are not unhealthy. The idea that saturated fats are unhealthy is based on the “lipid hypothesis” which has been thoroughly debunked by science. Humans evolved eating saturated fats and consequently are well tolerated.

In the last 50 years healthy animal fat has been replaced with fats that have never existed in human diet (refined oils, corn oil, vegetable oil, etc).. Resulting in the large rates of cardiovascular disease we see today.

Science has also proved that livestock feed a natural diet, grass feed beef for example, has a very healthy nutritional profile, compared to industrialized methods. Livestock on a natural diet have elevated levels of omega-3. For ideal health humans need a diet rich in omega-3. Fish is the only other major source of omega-3. Additional science has found that pasture raised beef produces significantly less methane (which greens love to ignore).

We live in a world were science is ignored, much like this article.

*******************

“If we’re to feed the world’s burgeoning (I had to look that up twice to see how it should be spelled!) population….” We already have the ability to feed the world’s burgeoning (didn’t need to look that up) population. It is not only, however, a matter of transport, it is a matter of political intransigence and financial incentives. The western world throws away twice as much food as the third world requires to avoid starvation. Political barriers (the EU agriculture policy to begin with) prevents the distribution of food around the world, as does the American policies of taxes, import duties and a preference for home grown agricyultural products, even though they cost three times as much as imported products. However, having staved off starvation of a third of the world’s population, it then falls to education to rebuild – chopping down trees so you can grown animale feed is not necessarily a good thing – and this is the real long term problem. I forget who it was who said something like, “First, kill all the lawyers.” Perhaps he should have followed that up with, “and then the politicians, and Jeremy Clarkson, and the French!”.

The Death Of Free Markets

Tim Worstall is a Thatcherite Conservative and a fan of free trade and globalisation. In response to an article in The Guardian about how Dairy Farmers are being squeezed by the supermarkets and broken on the wheel of EU regulations he penned a response accusing our dairy farmers of being uincompetitive and unable to face the challenges of a free market economy. All he proved is that the left don’t have a monopoly on stupid, arrogant twats.

Thatcherite conservatives in the UK and Reaganite Republicans in the USA love to talk of free markets and the utopia they create. But do free markets ever exist. What looks like a free market from above is anything but when viewed from the ground.Policies supposed to protect the efficient have been hijacked by a cartel of food retail chains. Dairy Farmers are being driven to bankruptcy because the”free market” in milk is entirely controlled by the big supermarkets.

How The United Nations Disappeared 50 Million Climate Refugees

Whatever happened to all those millions of refugees who were going to be heading our way when they were made homeless by the effects of climate change? you might well ask. You probably wouldn’t because like me you had forgotten about them. Some diligent people have not and so the question has been raised. And the Unied Nations lies, deceptions and Orwellian rewriting of the past machine has gone into overdrive.

One of the people on the UN’s case is Anthony Watts, Meteorologist and Climate Blogger who has an interesting article in The Daily Caller. Here’s a teaser:

Oh boy, government idiocy at its finest. Not only is the original claim bogus, the attempts to disappear it are hilariously inept. Apparently, they’ve never heard of Google Cache at the UN. Rather than simply saying “we were wrong,” they’ve now brought even more distrust onto the UN.

Back on April 11th, Gavin Atkins of Asian Correspondent asked this simple question: What happened to the climate refugees?

It is a valid question, and he backs it up with census numbers. Here’s the first part of his story.

In 2005, the United Nations Environment Programme predicted that climate change would create 50 million climate refugees by 2010. These people, it was said, would flee a range of disasters including sea level rise, increases in the numbers and severity of hurricanes, and disruption to food production.

The UNEP even provided a handy map. The map shows us the places most at risk including the very sensitive low lying islands of the Pacific and Caribbean.

It so happens that just a few of these islands and other places most at risk have since had censuses, so it should be possible for us now to get some idea of the devastating impact climate change is having on their population. Let’s have a look at the evidence:

Killer Red Meat Report Was Faked By Researchers Says Analysis.

Last week, in Frying Pan Fascists Want To Steal Your Steak we reported one of those health scare things scientists cook up now and again in order to get money from Big Pharma, Big Agriculture or in the latest scare promoted by Big Government.

Cut read meat consumption or you will surely die a painful, lingering death, they screamed at us as if even looking at a burger would take twenty years off our lives.

The press releases were big on sensation, light on detail, which is not surprising as the details did not bear out the conclusion (after climategate, cutletgate?)

What the details did show is that the conclusion of this gigantic, very long term study was dishonest.

Cut red meat, they said. We already had reduced red meat consumption considerably since the exercise started so there was no oint telling us how many extra years we would live if we cut just one portion of read meat a day from our menu. You see the avergage male (and men tend to eat more meat than women) consumes less than one portion of red meat a day.

So really this was just an attempt by the left wing neo nazi bansturbators who have hijacked the public sector to remove red meat from the menu.

Scientists Warn ‘Red Meat Can Be Lethal’, it is not only unhealthy but can increase the risk of death, according to a major US study:

Now you quickly get to the nature of this science in the line above. “can increase the risk of death”. Unscientific, scaremongering BOLLOCKS. We are all going to die, forget the delusional belief among scientists that they can immunise us against death, nobody lives for ever. So the risk of death is 100%, it cannot get any higher, it will not get any lower. Therefore you should read reports of this type of research with the appropriate degree of scepticism.

New research carried out in the USA and published today demonstrates eating red meat regularly, especially processed meats dramatically increases the risk of death from heart disease and cancer. Each additional daily serving of processed red meat, equivalent to one hot-dog or two rashers of bacon, raised the chances of dying by a fifth. Data from 121,342 men and women taking part in two large US health and lifestyle investigations were analysed to produce the findings, published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

Now note the vagueness and obfuscatory tactics here. The do not say red meat eaters will die at 60 instead of 80. What they do appear to be saying is that for every ten people who eat red meat, twelve will die. The premise is irrational.

The study claims researchers found that cutting red meat out of the diet led to significant benefits but here again we see the way the issue is clouded in an attempt to manipulate readers. They find a problem with processed meat which in fact is not confined to red meat but, as has been known for years there is a problem with all highly processed foods, red or white meats, fats and they reduce it to appear as it it only applies to the food hate symbol of the limp wristed vegetarian Nazi party (“healthy low fat spreads” are the most dangerous things you can eat apart from the kind of stuff that comes in bottles with a skull and crossbones on the label).

Replacing red meat with fish, poultry, or plant-based protein foods contributed to a longer life, the study says although many other studies have shown vegetarians do not live significantly longer than red meat eater. Nuts are said to reduce the risk of dying by 20% – making a case for swapping roast beef for nut roast.

The studies monitored the progress of their participants for more than 20 years and gathered information about diet. In total, scientists documented 23,926 deaths including 5,910 from heart disease and 9,364 from cancer. Senior author Professor Frank Hu, from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, said: “This study provides clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death.

“On the other hand, choosing more healthful sources of protein in place of red meat can confer significant health benefits by reducing chronic disease morbidity (illness) and mortality.”

Funny how the results of these studies carried out by leftie academics always affirm the moral prejudices of leftie academics and serve to advance their control freak agenda, don’t you think. When you read that cancer prevention charity the World Cancer Research Fund recommends that people avoid processed meat entirely and limit their consumption of red meat to 500g a week it’s easy to see the hand of health fascism at work. In fact the biggest problem we have with western dies now is the result of scientists meddling with so much of the food we eat for the sole purpose of boosting corporate profits. It is not the meat in processed meats, the ground grain in bread or cakes nor the oil in processed fats that does the harm, it is the added chemicals, the colourings, artificial flavourings, preservatives etc. Look at the list of ingredients on a pack of processed meat, a savoury snack, a pack of breakfast cereal. Food is not the problem, science is the problem.

Dr Rachel Thompson, the charity’s deputy head of science, said: “This study strengthens the body of evidence which shows a link between red meat and chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. The research itself seems solid and is based on two large-scale cohort studies monitored over a long period of time.”

And when you look at the length of time it becomes clear we are not talking about people living ten of five years less on average but a few weeks less. Ah well as the old saying goes, torture data long enough and it will tell you whatever you want it to.

We know that many other studies show there is no higher risk in eating red meat and that such results as are offered by this latest farrago can easily be obtained by manipulating data. Cult of Scienceology followers reading this will accuse The Daily Stirrer of being anti science. We are not, we are anti-pseudoscirntific-bullshit. And we are not the only ones..The study’s findings were challenged by Dr Carrie Ruxton from the Meat Advisory Panel , an expert body funded by the meat industry.

She said: “This US study looked at associations between high intakes of red meat and risk of mortality, finding a positive association between the two. However, the study was observational, not controlled, and so cannot be used to determine cause and effect. “The authors’ conclusion that swapping a portion of red meat for poultry or fish each week may lower mortality risk was based only on a theoretical model.

In other words, other lifestyle factors that could have ben significant were factored out of the study. And again we see the common preference of modern, politicised scientists for working with theoretical models rather than reality.

Dr. Ruxton went on to point out this study’s conclusion conflicts with evidence from controlled trials. She pointed out that meat and meat products were significant sources of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, B vitamins and vitamin D. So as these are all essential nutrients following the advice of the report would result in people being malnourished. Good work guys.

In the UK, red meat was “critically important” to zinc intake, contributing 32% of the total for men and 27% for women. Red meat also contributed around 17% of total dietary iron intake in the UK.

We give the last word to Dr. Ruxton: “In summary, this paper should not be used to dissuade people from reducing their current intake of red meat when it provides essential nutrients that are required as part of a healthy balanced diet.”
