Meningitis B Vaccine – cost conundrum

Bacterial meningitis is one of the most feared of all childhood infections in Britain. It is capable of killing or disable within hours of symptoms emerging. And yet with proper information it can be identified with a simple test, which too few parents are aware of.

Vaccine campaigners are up in arms over the fact that that the bodyset up to advise the government on immunisation has not recommend the introduction of a vaccine against the most common cause of the disease.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has decided that a vaccine against meningitis B (MenB) is simply not cost-effective. One wonders if the vaccineate against everything brigade are more concerned about childrens’ health or drug companies profits. The cost of vaccinating every child, set against the low effectiveness rating of the vaccine and the cost per dose simply do not justify the introduction of this vaccine.

The vaccine has taken 20 years to develop and was licensed throughout Europe in January 2014. Health committees in France and Spain are considering the vaccine but no country has yet recommended its introduction.

The JCVI is the vaccine equivalent of NICE, the body that advises the NHS on new medicines. Given that NHS resources are finite, each committee has to decide whether a new product is cost-effective. This is done by using an internationally recognised system known as quality-adjusted life years (QALY).

A QALY is an assessment of how many extra months or years of life of a reasonable quality a person might gain as a result of a treatment.

One of the biggest supporters of vaccines in the academic community is on record as having said if a medicine or therapy cost one million pound per person but saves one life it should be used without question. From that it is easy to see why the pro – vaccine lobbys ravings should be treated with scepticism.

To be cost-effective, any new vaccine, cancer medicine or heart treatment should cost no more than £20-30,000 for every QALY it saves.

The JCVI has concluded that the MenB vaccine did not meet the economic criteria at any level. In other words, introducing the vaccine would not be a good use of limited NHS resources, which could be better spent elsewhere.

In January a European Commission-funded study concluded that the QALY system of assessing new treatments was flawed.

The announcement from the JCVI will provoke anger and dismay from charities and families affected by the disease. They will argue that the committee has not adequately assessed the appalling lifelong burden of meningitis.

Really we should not be influenced by sentimentality, the issue is about resources. If an individual disease like this is looked at by people directly affected, decisions can easily appear unjust. Were we to try to save the life of every person afflicted by every disease however, we would quickly drive the standard of living of healthy people back to the medieval era.

MPs attack BBC for its ‘biased EU reporting’:

Corporation accused of ‘falling down severely’ in its obligation to provide impartial coverage.

A report published last Wednesday revealed that the House Of Commons European Scrutiny Committee criticized BBC News about the manner in which the it was treating EU issues.

The Parliamentary all party group strongly published strongly worded warning that the BBC’s coverage of news concerning the European Union was not giving fair attention to the views of people in Britain who think the country should quit the EU.

The European Scrutiny Committee is a select committee of the UK Parliament, assessing and debating the legal and political importance of each EU document and reviewing procedural and institutional developments in the European Union. One paragraph read “The Committee concludes that the BBC has not yet demonstrated that it commands wide confidence in its coverage of the EU.”

The report is a follow-up to November 2013 recommendations to the BBC over its coverage of EU related proceedings in the House of Commons, as well as wider EU issues.

The Committee questioned Chairman of the BBC Trust Rona Fairhead in January, and Lord Hall, Director-General of the BBC, in March, about how the broadcaster was dealing with EU issues.

Hall appeared before the Committee after refusing the invitation three times, which according to the report, is deeply regrettable, as it delayed the session.

Here’s a snippet from an article published in The Spectator about a year ago, which drew attention to the increasing pro – EU bias in the BBC’s reporting of European political affairs.

Over the last three years the BBC has secretly obtained millions of pounds in grants from the European Union. Licence fee payers might assume that the Corporation would have been compelled to disclose the source of this money in its annual reports, but they bear no trace of it specifically. In the latest set of accounts, for example, these funds are simply referred to as ‘other grant income’.

Instead of making an open declaration, the BBC’s successful lobbying for this money had to be prised out of it using a Freedom of Information (FoI) request lodged for The Spectator, proving that there was never any danger of the state broadcaster’s bosses volunteering it willingly.

The FoI response confirms that BBC staff applied for, and accepted, about £3 million of EU funds between April 2011 and November 2013, most of which has been spent on unspecified ‘research and development’ projects, with the remaining £1 million spent on programming.

Next to the £3.65 billion tax-free income that the BBC receives each year via the licence fee, £3 million is, admittedly, a mere speck of dust – just 0.8 per cent of its annual guaranteed revenue and, obviously, even less than that when spread over 36 months.

However, the size of these EU gifts is arguably irrelevant, even though they are indicative of the BBC’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for public money. What is undeniably true is that the BBC has acted with characteristic slyness by concealing that it ever requested, let alone received, this European cash, suggesting that it is uneasy about the public being aware of its financial arrangements.

I have lost count of the times that having offered proof that Big Bang is not a fact but a mathematical speculation and that the universe is in fact infinite I have become involved in thousand – comment threads in which the rational and clearly thought out arguments of the Big Bang sceptics were contradicted by science tits exploring how many different ways they could present the highly scientific argument, “It is a fact because we say it is.”

US Puppet In Kiev Restarts War With Donbass Separatists

Back in February 2014, Victoria Nuland, the US Diplomat (ahem), whose famous open mic. moment revealed that once again the ‘Conspiracy Theorists’ had been right and the USA was behind the coup d’etat that deposed a corrupt, but democratically elected government and installed the neo fascist puppet government in Kiev, selected Arseniy Yatsenyuk as the Prime Minister of Ukraine. On Wednesday, March 18th, Yatsenyuk told his colleagues, “Our goal is to regain control of Donetsk and Lugansk.” With those words the Ukrainian Prime Minister tore up the Minsk agreement brokerd by German chancellor Merkel and France’s President Hollande and restarted Obama’s proxy war and the genocide of ethic Russians in Ukraine.

Yatsenyuk further announced: “Adequate financial resources are available,” to retake Donbass.”

Those “resources” come largely from the IMF, and from the United States, all with loans to the bankrupt Ukrainian Government. So that the investors will be paid the principal plus the extremely high interest on these junk-loans that are backed by their governments, Western taxpayers will ultimately be, basically, donating to Franklin Templeton, and to George Soros, and to the other financiers who are buying the Ukrainian Government bonds that will fiance the murder of thousands of ethic Russians in east Ukraine. Their blood will be on the hands of We The People though nobody asked us is we had anything against them.

Donetsk and Lugansk are the two districts comprising Donbass, the self-proclaimed independent region of Ukraine, which now calls itself “The People’s Republic” and sometimes “Novorossiya,” and which rejects the coup and its coup-imposed Government.

That Government of Ukraine is run by Yatsenyuk and the people whom he selected. Ukraine also has a President, who is elected by voters in the northwest of Ukraine, where the coup-government is accepted; but, since the coup, the Government has actually been run by Prime Minister Yatsenyuk, who is entirely dependent upon the United States Government and its subordinates (such as the IMF and NATO, in both of which the U.S. has veto-power) in order to obtain the financial and military support necessary to keep him in office.

Democracy is dead, the American government is determined to start an east west war. How much longer Russia and China will continue their policy of restraint in the face of constant American provocation is anybody’s guess.

Previous mass bombings of DNR and LNR, as well as mass attacks by Kiev on both republics, were all scheduled during an important holiday, in order to spoil people’s celebration. This year, Pascha is celebrated on April 12.

Tom Cotton says Iran must be stopped because ‘they already control Tehran’

With guys like this running things is it any wonder the world is teetering on the brink of all out war?

US Republican Senator Tom Cotton (Arizona) on Sunday cited Iran’s control of their own capital, Tehran, as a reason that the country had to be stopped from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

In a interview on CBS, Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer pointed out that Cotton’s letter to Iran, which was also signed by 46 other Republican senators, may have undermined President Barack Obama’s ability to get a nuclear deal with Iran.

“Let’s say the deal falls through, then what?” Schieffer wondered.

Cotton replied by quoting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The alternative to a bad deal is a better deal,” the freshman senator insisted. “The Iranians frequently bluff to walk away from the table. If they bluff this week, call their bluff. Congress stands ready to impose much more severe sanctions.”

“Moreover, we have to stand up to Iran’s attempts to drive for regional dominance,” he continued. “They already control Tehran and, increasingly, they control Damascus and Beirut and Baghdad. And now, Sana’a as well.”

“They do all that without a nuclear weapon. What they would do without a nuclear weapon.”

Cotton told Schieffer that he had “no regrets at all” about sending the letter to Iran.

We can’t prove sex with children does them harm’ says Labour-linked NCCL

The paedophile scandal that has exposed the corruption and culture of close ranks and cover up that runs through the British establishment, encompassing political, media and showbusiness figures as well as law officers, civil servants local government, just keeps unfolding.

We reported on Boggart Blog today the depth of the cover up by the BBC of Jimmy Savile’s sex abuse crimes. In another branch of the scandal, evidence has emerged that the views of the Paedophile Information Exchange influenced policy-making at the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) when it was run by former Labour Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt, The Daily Express reports.

PIE members were lobbying NCCL (now known as Liberty after sheer embarrassment prompted a namechange) officials for the age of consent to be reduced (to the age of FOUR some PIE members requested) and campaigning for “equal rights for paedophiles” .

Their view that children were not harmed by having sex with adults appears to have been adopted by those at the top of the civil liberties group, many of whom are now senior figures in the Labour Party or in human rights groups.

Today The Express published extracts from an NCCL report written for the Criminal Law Revision Committee in 1976 when Patricia Hewitt was the charity’s general secretary.

It states: “Childhood sexual experiences, willingly engaged in, with an adult result in no identifiable damage.

“The Criminal Law Commission should be prepared to accept the evidence from follow-up research on child ‘victims’ which show there is little subsequent effect after a child has been ‘molested’.

“The real need is a change in the attitude which assumes that all cases of paedophilia result in lasting damage.

“The present legal penalties are too high and reinforce the misinformation and prejudice. The duty of the court should be to inquire into all the relevant circumstances with the intention, not of meting out severe punishment, but of determining the best solution in the interests of both child and paedophile.”

Mrs Hewitt, 65, was general secretary between 1974 and 1983. After days of intense pressure, the former Labour MP for Leicester West finally admitted last week the NCCL was “naive and wrong” over its ties to PIE.

An Ofcom spokesman said: “Ofcom has launched an investigation into whether this programme about the situation in Ukraine, which included anti-western comments, was duly impartial.”

Russia Today is to be investigated by media regulator Ofcom over anti-western comments in a late-night discussion on Ukraine – its sixth ongoing inquiry into the Kremlin-backed news channel following complaints by viewers.

The regulator, which threatened Russia Today, or RT, with statutory sanctions after repeated breaches of broadcasting regulations on impartiality last year, faces a new investigation over its Crosstalk programme broadcast on 23 December last year.

The programme is understood to have featured a number of anti-western views in the discussion between the presenter and three studio guests, prompting one viewer to complain.

OK, that was just for people who remember Hong Kong Fooey. But yes, Reuters did carry a news item about China wasrning the USA to stop killing Ukranians in the desperate efforts to provoke the Russians into starting a shooting war.

A much-ignored huge news report from Reuters on Friday, February 27th, was headlined “Chinese diplomat tells West to consider Russia’s security concerns over Ukraine.”

China’s Ambassador to Belgium said that the “nature and root cause” of the Ukrainian conflict is “the West,” (Little Nicky and his friends at The Daily Stirrer told you that a year ago of course, everybody who wasn’t brain dead knows the Ukrainian revolution was engineered and backed by the USA, EU and NATO) The ambassador also warned that “The West should abandon the zero-sum mentality, and take the real security concerns of Russia into consideration.”

By “real security concerns,” the Chinese are clearly referring to NATO’s expansion right up to Russia’s border, and America’s surrounding Russia with U.S. military bases, now increasingly including the most strategic of Russia’s bordering countries: Ukraine.

In other words, this diplomat says: “the West” has a “zero-sum” attitude toward Russia, instead of seeking to move forward with an approach in which neither side among the nuclear superpowers benefits at the other’s expense — the entire world moves forward together.

This is a direct criticism of Barack Obama, and of all of the pro-Obama, anti-Putin, EU leaders.

It’s also an implicit repudiation of Obama’s having repeatedly referred to the U.S. as “the one indispensable nation.” (Another example of that phrase is here.) Obama keeps saying: every other nation, except the U.S., is “dispensable.” He clearly thinks that Russia is.

That’s not merely an insult: it’s an act of provocation; it is virtually asking for a fight. And all for what? For whose geopolitical advantage? Cui bono?

This criticism of the aggressive nationalist Obama does not come from China’s top leadership, but it would not have come at all if they had not approved of it in advance.

China thus now tells Obama: Stop it. Stop it in word, and in deed.

Implicitly, China is also telling Obama: China is not dispensable, either. Don’t fuck with us. In fact don’t fuck with anybody without our permission.

Like Russia, China does not give a damn about American exceptionalism or the delusional American worldview. The entire mentality, which Obama embodies, is not just callous and insulting; it’s dangerous.

Like President G.W. Bush, Obama is increasingly an embarassment to his country.
