Italy’s Northern League launches drive for power

Lega Nord supporters rally in front of Milan Cathedral

We are accustomed in our libertarian blogs, The Daily Stirrer and Boggart Blog, to mentioning the Five Star Movement led by Beppe Grillo whenever the topic of anti E U feeling in Italian politics is in the news. This is perhaps unfair to Italy’s oldest anti EU party, Lega Nord, (The Northern League,) led by the rising star of the Italian right Matteo Salvini.

While it is probably unfair to describe Lega Nord as ‘right wing’ (they are Libertarian) the party is a strong opponent of the cultural Marxism of European and American consensus politics.

One of the Northern League’s problems is that its founder, Umberto Bossi always pursued a separatist agenda, arguing that the highly industrialised north of Italy should split from the economically agrarian and politically conservative south. Thus the party was seen as a regional political force only.

Now however, The Northern League has launched a political campaign aimed at winning support in the southern regions, with a view to eventually forming a national government.

Though previous attempts to make the regional party a nationwide
force have failed, Lega Nord is gambling on Salvini’s popularity, his anti-immigration, anti-EU stance and the growing feeling that further integration of EU member states being demanded by Brussels threatens national sovereignty and cultural identity, to turn them into a national force.

“We will make it into power. I don’t know when, but we will get there,” Salvini told reporters at a press conference launching the campaign..

Party leaders said membership in the new effort is open to any Italian not already in office, though politicians’ bids to join the movement will also be considered on a
case-by-case basis.

Salvini said it is an attempt to avoid “recycling” certain politicians who may be hoping to take advantage of the party’s momentum, which is being spurred by his steadily growing popularity. (Now who do we think he could be referring to? Signor Berlusconi perchance?)

A recent poll ranked Salvini just behind Prime Minister Matteo Renzo on Italians’ list of favourite political leaders. His rise has been compared to Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front in France.
Salvini is a fan of Le Pen, who has softened the hard-right image of her party and broadened its appeal as voters across Europe have turned to pro-independence parties in a backlash against the Brussels bureaucracy and the economic gloom engulfing much of the euro zone.

E U Smart Borders Policy Will Lead To Big Brother Type Surveillance, Green Politician Warns

A European Union scheme to implement new border control technology will result in Big Brother surveillance, a Green Party Member of the European Parliament has warned.

The European Commission’s plans for so-called ‘Smart Borders’ were published on 1 March 2013, revealing the Commission plans to implement automated systems to monitor non-EU citizens entering and leaving the bloc.

“The use of new technologies will enable smoother and speedier border crossing for third country citizens who want to come to the EU. Modernising our systems will also lead to a higher level of security by preventing irregular border crossings and detecting those who overstay,” said Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström.
Jan Philipp Albrecht a German Green in the European Parliament but obviously not a Watermelon (green on the outside, red on the inside) voiced concerns that the smart borders initiative would create an “e-fortress Europe” adding there is “no evidence to show that this trend towards mass data storage has yielded any improvements for security and criminal investigations.” Data of all passengers traveling from third countries into the EU would be collected, he said.

The E U plan consists of a Registered Traveler Programme (RTP) aimed at frequent business travelers or those with relatives in the EU and an Entry/Exit System (EES). The RTP would make use of automated border control systems such as automated gates for pre-screened visitors.

The EES would digitally record the time and place of entry and exit of third country nationals and issue an alert to national authorities when there is no exit record by the expiry time. The current practice when checking a third country national wanting to cross the EU’s external borders is based mainly on the stamps in the travel document. It is easy to foresee that as social breakdown continues due to the failure of the single currency, high unemployment due to insane industrial policies and the inefficiency of high tech policing, the system would quickly be extended to monitor the movements of all citizens even within their own community.

The plan calls to mind the U K Labour government’s plan to force us all to carry national ID cards loaded with a GPS chip whenever we left our home. The plan was shelved due to public opposition but has never been abandoned. Similarly a clause in the American Healthcare System dubbed Obama care contains a clause that would enable the government to implant an RFID chip in the body of every citizen. Supporters of Obama’s health care plan protest that the bill does not state people will be chipped. This is true, but it does clear legal obstacles in the US Constitution and international human rights law to such a policy.

Together with fellow politician Ska Keller, Albrecht has set up a campaign called Smashborders to oppose the plans, urging EU citizens to fight against “the creation of an enormous database” that would infringe civil liberties.

The proposals will now go before the European Parliament and, if approved there, to the national assemblies of member states for ratification. The Commission hopes the system will be operational in 2017 or 2018.

The Total Surveillance Society

Surveillance cameras, CCTV,electronic monitoring, data gathering from credit card use and other transactions, all are commonplace. When we start to hear talk of implanting RFID chips in human bodies or making a criminal offence of not carrying an official identity card when outside one’s home, we start to understand how sinister the surveillance industry has become and what threats it poses to our rights and liberties.

Europes Crisis Is Going To Get A Lot More Insane

How would you go about solving your personal debt problem if your credit cards were maxed out, your overdraft was over it’s limit and your income would not stretch to buying basics after all the interest on your morthgage and loans had been paid.? Go to a loan shark? Of course not, that should be a no brainer even for politcians and bureaucrats. But it is exactly where Europe is heading.

Euro-Lefties have been having a thin time of it recently. Only three per cent of EU citizens live under socialist or socialist-led governments. The European People’s Party is the largest bloc in the European Council, as measured by voting weight, second are the European Conservatives and Reformists, who edge ahead of both the Liberals and the Socialists.

That, though, is about to change. France,a nation in which the state consumes 56 per cent of GDP, even more than our own greedy government – monster, and whose budget was last in balance in 1974, has just elected François Hollande who, on a platform of ‘growth, not austerity,’ (if only achieving it was as easy as saying it) will try to create illusory growth in the economy by borrowing more and more money at ever higher interest rates and giving it away to the lazy, the shiftless and the corporations whose business is built on mining taxpayer’s pockets.

Greece, which also voted when France did and now must vote again, is inclining toward a pack of communist parties; the politicians there who talk openly of the need for cuts currently command less than seven per cent in the polls.

Fortunately the parties of Greece’s fragmented left hate each other more than they hate the bankers who screwed their country Romania, too, is about to install a Leftist ministry, following the defeat of the last government’s austerity platform. As other elections follow around the poor nations of Europe, we can expect more of the same.

The invevitable result of this will be that Europe will return to and intensify all the policies that brought it to its present unhappy condition: loonytoons spending, unsustainable borrowing, obscene levels of taxation, deeper fiscal and political integration integration. Voters, protected from reality for too long by the EU’s overgenerous benefits system are in not willing to accept less generous benefits and pensions. They’d rather be told what they want to hear that the money can somehow be got out of the rich.

A politician who admits the truth that the rich, a tiny fraction of the total population, have nothing like enough to pay for all the things that modern governments want to do is liable to have rotten fruit, dead vermin and molotov cocktails thrown at him … by member of his own party.

Even in the north European countries that still recognise the virtue of financial discipline the Centre-Right parties in government have done little to bring spending under control. All are running deficits that would have been catastrophic a generation ago. But like the other Elepphant In The Room, immigration, nobody wants to talk about it.

For Britain, official Treasury figures show that, contrary to almost universal belief, total public s ending is higher today than it was under Gordon Brown. The left constantly scream abouut the unfairness of the Coatolitions cuts but the Coalition austerity measures have not reduced spending by one penny. All that has been achieved is a lowdown in the rate of acceleration at which we are amassing debt.

The EU is in a downward spiral. The worse things get, the more reluctant its governments are to tackle the underlying problem of excessive expenditure. Lacking any alternative narrative, voters blame the lack of growth on ‘cuts’, ‘bankers’ and ‘deregulation’. They then support parties committed to even higher spending – which, of course, exacerbates the problem. And, as if national governments were not burdensome enough, Europeans must also contend with more rules and more taxes and a headlomg dash towards fascism from Brussels.

The E U is insance and growing more psychotic by the minute. We must get out. Ignore those wimps who say it is impossible; unless you want to live under a system of oligarchic collectiveism (see George Orwell’s 1984) we simply cannot allow it to be impossible. FFS we stood up to Hitler’s Wehrmacht, have we become so weak we are prepared to let a bunch of penpushers in Brussels destroy our nation?
