Why do people get so upset when you challenge the ideals they hold most closely.
Mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are contradicted by new information. The concept was introduced by psychiatrist Leon Festinger (1919 – 89)in the late 1950s.
He and later researchers showed that when confronted with new or challenging information most people seek to preserve their current understanding of the world by rejecting, explaining away or avoiding the new information or by convincing themselves that no conflict exists.
Cognitive dissonance is nonetheless considered an explanation for attitude change.
Now you know why lefties get so angry when you point out that that stimulating the economy with borrowed money does not work, why unrestricted immigration is a bad idea for a heavily populated nation, why shovelling ever greater amounts of cash into the back hole that is Africa is futile and why all the other left wing sacred cows are the reason the country is drowning in shit.
The mind of one freethinker can possess millions of ideas, the minds of millions of fanatics can be held by one idea.
